Iraqi President appoints new Prime Minister

Iraqi PM defiantly says he'll stay amid ISIS threat, humanitarian nightmare

Irbil, Iraq (CNN) -- Iraq's political turmoil is getting so severe, it could further impede the country's ability to fight off extremists.
Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki announced Monday that he intends to stay in office for a third term, much to the chagrin of U.S. and other world leaders, who say the ability to defend against the radical Sunni group ISIS is contingent on forming a more inclusive government.
Iraq is already grappling with a humanitarian nightmare so dire that families are fleeing to Syria. And the threat of ISIS, which controls one-third of Iraq, continuing its deadly takeover of cities is so strong that U.S. forces are attacking targets from the sky.
"I've never seen Iraq so bad -- ever," CNN national security analyst and former CIA operative Bob Baer said Monday.
